Chapter Nine

Caleb

This time with Amber was fucking everything. I would have stayed an eternity in our weird little bubble of the living room, but when she rested her head against my chest and stared at the wall, I felt her tension growing.

“Everything will be fine,” I said and trailed my hand over her shoulder. “Leo won’t find you here.”

Amber rolled and propped her head on her hands to look at me. “You’re still going to go after him, aren’t you?” she asked and ran her fingers over a bruise around my eye, making me wince. “What if I said I didn’t want you to?”

“I can’t stand by and do fucking nothing.”

“I’m not asking you to.” She sat up and pulled the cushion from the back of the couch, tugging it to her breasts, drawing her knees close, and wrapping her arms around both of them. “I’ve decided to speak to Tom and file a police report. Maybe he can arrest Leo. We should try to follow the law, at least at first.”

I looked at the floor unsure what to say. My insides raged and I wanted nothing more than to smash Leo’s fucking face in with my fists, but I knew how difficult it was for Amber to deal with that side of my personality. She’d as good as told me that she couldn’t have that part of me in her life, and I didn’t want to risk pushing her away when I’d just got her back.

“If that’s what you want, I’ll do it,” I said although the vein in my head popped at the thought. “But It won’t be easy. They may take Leo in for questioning, but any evidence will be long gone.”

Her eyes darted to the door and I wondered for a second if she’d heard someone coming when I hadn’t. I held my breath, listening, but no-one was there.

“Let’s grab our clothes and talk about this upstairs where no-one can interrupt us,” I said and moved to stand.

Amber tugged on my arm and pulled me back down.

“There’s something you need to know.” The tone in her voice made my jaw clench. What the fuck could be worse than what she’d already been through?

I edged closer to her. When she remained silent and stared at the door again, I had to stifle the growl building inside me. Not two minutes ago she’d made me agree to let the law deal with Leo, and now I just knew there was more to this fucking story. More hurt he had caused than she’d already told.

I clasped onto her hand and squeezed. “What is it, Amber?”

She shifted her gaze from the door and looked at me for a long moment. When she finally spoke, her voice was deadpan. “A month or so after I left, I found out I was pregnant.”

Fuck!

Not only had she dealt with her attack all by herself, but she’d also had to deal with the aftermath too. Fucking Leo. If it wasn’t for my agreement with Amber, I’d do more than kill him.
